- Weight - Weight in the wheels is more significant than weight anywhere else on the bike, thus lightweight wheels are ideal.
- Aerodynamics - Typically, the rider's body accounts for 65% of the of the drag, the bike accounts for 20%, the spinning wheels account for 10%, and rolling resistance accounts for 5%. So, once you've got yourself and your bike as aerodynamic as possible, it's your wheels that will most affect how easily you travel.
- Rotational inertia - Low inertia significantly and directly affects the power required to accelerate the bicycle. Generally speaking the lowest weight wheel typically results in the lowest inertia.

Number of Spokes - Conventional bicycle wheels commonly have 28, 32 or 36 spokes. Wheels with fewer spokes have an aerodynamic advantage, as the aerodynamic drag from the spokes is reduced. On the other hand, the reduced number of spokes results in a larger section of the rim being unsupported, necessitating stronger and often heavier rims. The more general trend in wheel design suggests technological advancement in rim materials may result in further reduction in the number of spokes per wheel.
